Night Owl Essentials: Engaging Activities for Working Nights from Home

Working the night shift can be tough! You’re trying to be productive and alert, while your body wants to do what it naturally does at this time, sleep! The goal is to keep your mind engaged and active. Engaging in stimulating activities (during down time) can help you stay focused and alert while working nights from home. Here are some activities that can keep you engaged during your shift. The great news is that almost all of these can be done on your phone or computer. There are also tangible options when our eyes need a break from the screen.

1. Puzzle Games

Solving puzzles like jigsaw, Sudoku or crosswords during your break can help stimulate your mind and maintain focus.

2. Brain Teasers

These are a great way to challenge yourself with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

3. Trivia Quizzes

Use online apps to test your trivia knowledge. You can find a wide range of topics that are covered, from history and science to pop culture and current events.

4. Coloring Books for Adults

This is personally one of my top 2 things to do during the night shift down time: coloring books. It is a very calming and therapeutic exercise that I did not expect to enjoy this much as an adult! A great way to relax while getting creative.

5. Word Search

A fun and mentally challenging activity that can not only keep your mind alert but can also help improve your concentration and vocabulary.

6. Online Escape Rooms

You can collaborate with friends (if they’re awake) or online groups to solve puzzles and escape virtual rooms in online escape room games. Not only will you be able to engage with others, you’ll also able to use your problem-solving skills.

7. DIY Crafts

Hands on activities such as creating DIY crafts like knitting, crocheting, or origami, can help reduce stress and keep your mind occupied during breaks.

8. Virtual Board Games:

Online virtual games that you can play with friends, family, or others in the online community is a fun way to interact with others and to unwind. There are so many to choose from, including the classics like Monopoly or Scrabble.

9. Mindfulness Apps

Use your smartphone for apps to help guide you through breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and stress-relief practices. Taking short breaks can help refresh your mind and increase your focus.

10. Audiobooks and Podcasts

Another one of my favorite night shift activities is to listen to a really engaging podcast. Listening to audiobooks or podcasts that greatly interest you will help keep you engaged and entertained during long periods of work, which will also help keep your mind stimulated. There are a variety of genres to choose from: comedy, fiction, non-fiction, self-help, etc.

By incorporating these activities into your nightly routine, you can stay engaged, focused, and productive while working nights from home. Remember to take regular breaks and listen to your body’s needs.
